At Misty Glass, we use self-adhesive lead strips to replicate the timeless charm of traditional windows while maintaining the performance of modern high-quality glazing. We offer the following lead profiles in two finishes:
• 6mm – Available in Silver & Antique
• 9mm – Available in Silver & Antique
• 12mm – Available in Silver & Antique
Understanding Lead Oxidation & Discoloration
Natural silver lead is made from raw metal alloy and undergoes a natural oxidation process when exposed to the atmosphere. Initially shiny, it gradually develops a soft, natural grey patina over time. During this transition, it’s normal for the lead to appear discoloured or display various hues on its surface.
Excessive rainfall can sometimes
cause spotting or a white
powdery deposit to form. This is
a natural part of the oxidation
process and can be gently wiped
away. However, avoid polishing,
as this restarts the oxidation
cycle. Eventually, the patina
will stabilize into a uniform
grey finish. The time required
for this process varies
depending on weather, location,
and environmental factors.
Antique Lead
For a more consistent
appearance, our antique lead
option features a pre-applied
dark grey coating. Unlike
natural silver lead, antique
lead maintains its finish from
the moment of installation and
does not undergo oxidation in
the same way. Antique lead is
commonly used on the external
side of the unit. Its darker
colour closely matches the
appearance of existing leaded
units, making it the ideal
choice for blending with
surrounding glazing.
